Mary Elizabeth Weadock Obituary

Mary Elizabeth Weadock, age 84, passed away peacefully at her home in Needham, Massachusetts, on July 3, 2025.

Mary Elizabeth was born to William and Elizabeth Klein of Sea Cliff, NY, on February 6, 1941, and spent her childhood in Sea Cliff with her younger sister, Wilma, before attending The College of Notre Dame in Baltimore, MD, where she earned her BA in Sociology in 1962. Following her undergraduate education, Mary Elizabeth set out to see Europe before attending Loyola University in Chicago, IL, where she earned her Master’s of Social Work degree. While earning her first graduate degree, Mary Elizabeth met Thomas Joseph Weadock Jr, whom she would later marry in 1969. Shortly after marrying, Mary Elizabeth and Tom welcomed the birth of their first child, Briana Michelle. Soon after, they set out to Tom’s native state of California, where their second child, Nicole Marguerite, was born.  After their brief time in California, Mary Elizabeth and her growing family relocated to the East Coast, settling in a suburb of Washington, D.C. During this time, she continued to be a loving mother to her two daughters while keeping her foot in the world of social work and working with at-risk youth. Her warmth and dedication to serving her community underpinned her work, even garnering media coverage for helping a young girl stranded at the airport as supervisor of the Travelers Aid Office at O’Hare Airport in Chicago, IL. Mary Elizabeth and Tom made their last move further north up the East Coast and finally settled in Needham, MA, shortly before welcoming their youngest child, Thomas Joseph III.

Mary Elizabeth pursued her many interests and hobbies while raising her family - she sewed clothes for her children, led Brownie and Girl Scout troops, knitted and crocheted, applied her 4H skills in her vast vegetable gardens, learned how to make chocolate candies, and honed her skills as a baker and gourmet cook which she then leveraged into a catering business. She indulged her lifelong love of cooking by joining a Gourmet Club with friends from Needham, in which they would meet monthly at each other's homes to enjoy a gourmet meal prepared by the host of the evening. These dinners led to strong friendships and a source of support as she and her friends navigated through life's challenges together as they grew older.

While enjoying her many interests, Mary Elizabeth jumped back into the world of social services and piloted Needham’s first “Open On Sundays” program at the Needham Senior Center, providing programming and social space for the town’s older adult population. After successfully establishing this program, she dove into full-time work and became the Director of Social Work at Goddard House Home for Aged Women in Brookline, MA. Seeing her capabilities, the Executive Director mentored Mary Elizabeth and encouraged her to pursue her second master's degree in Healthcare Administration, which she earned at Emerson College while working full-time and raising three teenagers. Upon graduating, Mary Elizabeth became the next Administrator of Goddard House, before moving on to multiple other leadership positions in various assisted living facilities in the Boston suburbs. Even after retirement, Mary Elizabeth did not rest for long and became a long-time care-giver to private clients allowing them to age in place, joined the boards of Springwell and the Needham Council on Aging, before translating her desire to help others into becoming a full-time MeMe to her son (Tom) and daughter-in-law’s (Robyn) three children, Anna Elizabeth, Kelsi Susan, and Luke Thomas.

Mary Elizabeth found relaxation at the family’s cottage near Provincetown, whether reading a book in the bay breeze or getting “huevies” for breakfast in town. The Cape held a special place in her heart, and she would happily drive the two hours if it meant she could spend even part of a day soaking in the sunshine and Cape air.
