Patrick Kenneth Mullane, 76, of Newton, MA, passed peacefully at home on September 14, 2024. He was born on March 16, 1948, in New York City, and was adopted at two weeks of age by Kenneth Mullane and Anne Boemann Mullane. He grew up on the Upper West Side of Manhattan.
Patrick attended his parish grammar school and Regis High School, a Jesuit prep school. He received his bachelor’s degree in mathematics from Columbia University, and completed one year of graduate work in math. Fascinated by art and buildings, he then studied at the Museum School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston and at the Boston Architectural Center.
As part of his studies at the BAC, he began work as a drafter at Souza, True, and Partners, a structural engineering firm. He had found his home, and happily worked in the drafting department there for 52 years, where he was highly regarded throughout his long career. After providing beautiful drawings by hand for years, Patrick was the first to use drafting software and taught his co-workers. Patrick loved his work, often telling his family that he never wanted to retire. And so it (almost) was: he stepped away four months before his death from cancer.
Patrick’s life was marked by love and devotion to his family. A quiet and gentle man, he greatly appreciated art and music, and enjoyed bicycling, photography (including darkroom work), long walks in the city, and reading fiction. He especially enjoyed the company of a large circle of friends.
Patrick is survived by Maggie Orr, his wife of 33 years, and his daughter Moira Orr-Mullane, both of Newton, as well as nephews, nieces, grandnephews and -nieces, and a new great grandnephew, whom Patrick was overjoyed to meet shortly before his passing. He was predeceased by his daughter Mamie Rose Orr-Mullane and his sister, Angela Hellstern of Vienna, VA.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Newton on September 27, 2024 at 10:30, with a luncheon immediately following. Masks will be available. Interment will be private.
The family respectfully requests that in lieu of flowers, contributions in Patrickʻs memory may be made to Boston Health Care for the Homeless
