Paul Kinchla Obituary

Paul Joseph Kinchla, husband of the late Marjorie G. (Whelan) Kinchla and second son of the late John Edward Kinchla and Anne Quigley died on Monday, January 31, 2011 at Epoch Senior Healthcare in Chestnut Hill, MA.

Paul grew up in Brighton and graduated from Boston College High School, class of 1940. He worked at his father’s business before enlisting in the Navy to serve in World War II. He participated in both the North Atlantic and Pacific Theater, during his four year commitment. Shortly after the conclusion of the Second World War he married Marjorie Whelan of Watertown, MA.

In 1950, Paul and Margie purchased a home in Newton where they raised nine (9) children in six bedrooms and one bathroom.

An active member of St. Bernard’s parish, Paul saw to it that his nine children attend parochial school, whether they liked it or not, from 1st through 12th grade. Many a nun thought that they had seen the last Kinchla, only to find another “little angel” in their classroom. A dedicated father and a loving husband, Paul encouraged his children to do the right thing, be accountable for their actions and deeds, and have faith in the Lord. He met his challenges with a song in his heart, whistling a happy tune and maintaining a positive attitude. He believed that hard work and dedication could overcome all obstacles.

In 1961, Paul and Margie bought a plot of sand in North Eastham on Cape Cod, built a lovely cottage and together the family became “Summer Residents”

On the first day of summer vacation, Paul and Margie would load up the Chevy wagon, with children, and head off to the Cape, not to return until after Labor Day. Paul would make his mid-week trip from Boston to visit Margie and resupply the family with provisions. The children did their part and kept the laundry to a minimum by wearing their bathing suits from dawn till dusk. Little did they realize that they were early adapters of the “Go Green Movement”. Paul was a “weekend warrior”, he would arrive on Friday evening ready to Sail, Swim, Water ski, Dig Clams, Toss a ball, Play a game or entertain family and friends. Paul expected his crew of nine, under Margie’s direction, to carry their own weight and keep things ship-shape. He was rarely disappointed.

A master of logistics, intelligent and forward thinking, Paul rose to become a corporate director at Calvin Klein Industries. In the late 1980’s, he retired and with Margie as co-pilot, they hit the road. A latter day, Lindbergh and Earhart they pursued many adventures and some epic road trips. Most often their travels lead them to family and friends, as their greatest joy was to be surrounded by loved ones. Never one to refuse an invitation, Paul was always ready to go and relished the opportunity to be with people. Well read and conversant on world and local affairs as well as historic events from decades and centuries ago, Paul had an uncanny memory for facts and details, his entire life, and added thoughtful insight to most discussions.

Generous of spirit and always good humored, Paul would often say that he loved Halloween. His pumpkin would be lit and he would have enough candy to feed an army of trick or treater. Paul delighted in connecting with his neighbors who provided kindness and support throughout the years.

Paul had a great love for his family, his children, grandchildren, great grandchildren and most of all, for his beloved wife. Paul would often say “United We Stand” and he and Marjorie lived up to that motto through 64 years of marriage. They shared a wonderful life, years of laughter and provided all of us with lasting memories.

Paul is survived by his four daughters Marjorie Nicholson, Hingham, MA, Joanne Kinchla, Acton, MA, Maryanne Sorge, San Diego, CA, Suzanne Hickey, Newton Centre, MA and his five sons John Kinchla, Windcrest, TX, Paul J Kinchla Jr, Eastham, MA, Peter Kinchla, Koana HI, Mark Kinchla, Orlando, FL and Michael Kinchla, Dover, MA .
