Paul Raymond Nichols

Paul Raymond Nichols long-time resident of Needham, Massachusetts died, peacefully surrounded by family on August 3, 2010.
Paul was born May 13, 1918 in Newport, New Hampshire to Guy David Nichols and Janette Blood, his one brother Reginald deceased. In 1941, he married his bride of 69 years, Margaret Ellen Rowell after he earned his B.S. from University of New Hampshire. After earning an M.A. from University of Connecticut in 1942, Paul joined the U.S. Army and served in the Philippines until 1945. While he was away, their first child, David Rowell Nichols was born in 1944 in Greeley, Colorado. Upon being reunited, they moved to Cambridge, Massachusetts where Paul earned an M.A. and later a Ph.D. from Harvard University. An Economics Professor at SImmons College from 1945-1973, Paul also served as Department Chair and as adjunct faculty at Simmons, Boston College, Babson and Northeastern University. Paul and Margaret made their home at 153 Grant Street in Needham for 56 years where they raised their children, David, Barbara and Carol.
Paul was a member of the First Baptist Church of Needham for 60 years. He served as treasurer for 25 of those years He was also a member of Nehoiden Lodge, Mount Vernon Royal Arch, the Shrine and Scottish Rite.
He was a diehard Red Sox and Boston Patriots fan, enjoyed watching UNH football and hockey, an avid fisherman, and consummate crossword puzzle solver.
Paul loved his family and is survived by his wife, Margaret, and his three children, David and his wife Carolyn of Charlestown, R.I., Barbara and her husband Victor Pierimarchi of West Newbury, Massachusetts, and Carol and her husband Paul Friesen of Austin, Texas, 10 grandchildren, and 9 (with one on the way) great grandchildren.
Arrangements are being made by the Eaton Funeral Home. As he wished, Paul will be buried in Newbury, New Hampshire. A memorial service is planned for Saturday, August 7 at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church, 858 Great Plain Ave., Needham, Massachusetts. Friends are invited to join his family from 10:00 to 11:00. There will be a Masonic and an Eastern Star service during this time. In lieu of flowers, donations may be sent to the First Baptist Church.
