Raymond Salminen Obituary

Raymond H. Salminen, July 7, 2010 passed peacefully away surrounded by his loving family, to be united with his loving wife of 56 years, Virginia, who passed away in February of this year.
Ray was a lifelong resident of the Acton and Maynard area. Born at 21 Roosevelt St. Maynard on April 20, 1921, he spent his youth and early years there. In 1958 he moved the family to Acton, where he lived until August 2009.
Ray loved life and lived it to the fullest. His character, accomplishments and persona couldn’t be properly eulogized in the next 89 years.
Briefly, Ray retired early from his successful career at the Sun Oil Co. in 1976 to pursue his many interests. He was a master craftsman whose work exhibited at several museums including the Fuller and Shelburne Museums. A passionate outdoorsman, he perfected the art of fly-tying and taught classes for 30 years at A.B. Adult Ed. As an avid fisherman in his travels around the world, it was in Norway that he landed the world’s 4th largest river salmon, weighting in at 56 lbs. Whether pheasant or deer hunting or hunting elk on horseback in Montana, he embraced it all.
Ray was an accomplished author penning his expertise for a variety of outdoor publications and has been quoted in several books. He was a proud member of the Masonic Order, the oldest and longest member of the Wrentham Rod & Gun Club as well as a member of the Maynard Historical Society.
He was never short of words: the voice that regaled the unending volumes of stories of events in his life will forever be missed by his devoted family and many treasured friends.
Survived by two daughters, Jan and her husband Kevin Montague and Karen Lefort, 4 granddaughters: Kristen & Robin Vasil, Karli & Kristi Lefort and 2 grandsons, Cameron & Drew Montague, all of Needham.
A memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 21 at 3:00 at St. John Evangelical Lutheran Church, 16 Great Road, Sudbury. In lieu of flowers, please come and if you with, share a memory as we celebrate the life he lived.
