Richard McGill Obituary

Richard McGill, of Dover; The Boston Flower Exchanges’ youngest and Most Honest Wholesaler in the Market passed away on Wednesday, May 4, among his close family and friends He was 80. A multi-talented athlete at Dover High, he particularly excelled at basketball and played alongside his brother Billy in the State Finals at Boston Garden which his Uncle Thomas declared would make “a hell of a hen house.” He turned down multiple scholarship opportunities to serve his country during the Korean War. His work ethic, learned working with his father Ken and mother Virginia, and his three brothers Jimmy, Bobby, and Billy on the family farm situated at “McGill Corner” just off Main Street , led him to his own business and many new friends and associates. Respected and admired, the friendships were mutually maintained for life.
He met his wife Janice, a fashion model who caught his fancy during his military service. They were married in 1952 and had three children, Denis, Penelope, and Kenneth. They were a fixture in their home on Main Street in Dover for many years where they entertained friends who mostly just dropped in and at all hours. Weddings were proudly celebrated there.
He will be remembered and always admired for his ability to meet anyone of any faith or race and learn their life story and remain friends and maintain the friendship. A past Commander of the Dover Legion, he leaves behind his wife of 59 years, Janice, his children; daughter Denis McGill Vollmuth and husband Gary of Medfield, daughter Penelope McGill of Falmouth, son Ken and wife Donna of Franklin, grandchildren Kristin, Kelly, Wesley, Danielle, Jessie, Whitney, Brett, Ken, and Harley; and three great-grandchildren.
