Robert Day Obituary

Robert F. Day, lifelong Needham resident and retired President of the Needham Cooperative Bank died on Thursday, January 12th at the Miriam Boyd Parlin Residence in Wayland. He was 100 years old. Born and raised in Needham, he was a graduate of Needham High School Class of 1928. He was a member of the Baseball, Basketball and Track teams at Needham High. He continued to play basketball and run track at Northeastern University.
He graduated from Northeastern University School of Business in 1934. At this time, Bob was offered a job by Firestone Rubber Co. to play pro basketball, an offer he refused. Bob attended Babson College School for Position and then went to work for his father's company, John R. Day General Building Contractor. Bob took over the business when his father died.
Mr. Day was a former member and Chairman of the Needham Board of Assessors. He was also a past President of the Mass Assessors Association, the Northeast Assessors –U.S. and Canada Assessors Association and served on the Board of the International Board of Assessors.
Bob was always very active in the Needham community. He was a Past President of the Needham Golf Club, the Needham Young Republicans and Needham Village Club. A member of the Needham Rotary Club for over 60 years, Bob had 56 years of perfect attendance. Mr. Day also served as Chairman of the Pollard School Building Committee and Vice Chairman of the Newman School Building Committee. He was a former Town Meeting Member and Call Fireman. Mr. Day was a member of the Ancient and Honorable Artillery Company, Norfolk Lodge AF & AM and the Aleppo Temple Shrine. A longtime member of the Christ Episcopal Church, he served on the Church Building Committee.
He was also a former member of the International Association of Chiefs of Police and the International Association of Assessing Officers. Additionally, he was a member of the Boston Madison Square Garden Club and the Northeastern University Presidents Club.
The beloved husband of the late Dorothy (Roberts) Day, he was the loving father of John and his wife Patricia Day of Needham, William and his wife Patricia Day of Walpole and Virginia and her husband Dr. Frank Barbera of North Caldwell NJ. Proud grandfather of Tim Day, Suzanne Teachout, Lesley Anne Day Morgan, Carolyn Day, Jennifer Barbera Sullivan, Nick Day and Kathy Day. He is also survived by 9 great grandchildren.
Visiting hours will be held in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham on Tuesday, January 17 from 4-8 PM. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Funeral Services will be held in the Christ Episcopal Church, 1132 Highland Ave Needham on Wednesday January 18 at 11:00 AM. Interment will follow at Needham Cemetery.
