Robert MacEwen Obituary

Robert A. MacEwen, of Needham, passed away on Monday, January 31, 2022. He was 92 years old. Born in Boston and raised in Roslindale, Bob was the son of the late Robert M. and Daphne (King) MacEwen.

Former husband of Nancy MacEwen Stone and survived by their children Steven W. MacEwen and his wife Debbie of Hopedale, Sherry L. Boulanger ad her husband John of Canton and Beth L. Carloni of Millis.

 Bob was preceded in death by his wife, the late Joan (Mitiguy) MacEwen and is survived by her children Lisa Harkins Tran of Needham, Deborah H. Anastas and her husband Paul of Needham and Elizabeth H. Dorisca and her husband Calixte of Medfield. Brother of the late C. Jean Egan. Uncle Bob to Kate (Egan) Glidden and Bob Egan of Nantucket. Bob is also survived by 9 grandchildren and 3 step-grandchildren.

A graduate of Northeastern University earning a Bachelor’s Degree in Civil Engineering. While at Northeastern, he excelled at both hockey and Baseball for the Huskies. Upon graduation, he enlisted in the Marine Corps and upon completion of basic training at Parris Island, SC. Bob served his country during the Korean War and completed his tour of duty at Cherry Point, NC. Bob returned to civilian life and moved from Roslindale to Needham where he proudly served the Town of Needham for 40 years as Town Engineer, Highway Superintendent and Public Works Director. In 1976 he was recognized by the American Public Works Association as a “Top Ten Public Works Leader in the Country”. He took great pride that his department made Needham a better place to live.

Bob taught himself to play the trumpet, piano and ukulele. He enjoyed playing cribbage with Sherry and tennis with Beth. He was a sports enthusiast and early on enjoyed the Boston Braves and then the Red Sox and Boston Bruins. He was a New York Giants fan until the Patriots became dominant in the NFL. A lifelong athlete, for Bob it was hockey and golf. He ran a hockey league at the old Tabor Rink in Needham. Bob was an avid golfer and was a member at the Needham Golf Club and Wellesley Country Club.

A private family funeral service will be held followed by interment at Needham Cemetery. A Celebration of Bob’s Life will be held at the Needham Golf Club, 49 Green St, Needham, on Sunday, May 1st at 12 noon. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
