Robert Alan Segel

Robert Alan Segel of Plymouth, formerly Newton and California, passed away on June 28, 2026, at the age of 84.
Born in Boston and raised in Newton.  When he was 8 years old, he earned $50.00 when he put on a carnival show with animals with the help of his little brother Alvin in Nantasket Beach. He donated the money to the American Heart Association.  Bob liked playing in the band at school. In fact, he really enjoyed the trombone but that was changed to a tuba because the other young man got ill and Bob was the only one that could carry it. Bob loved working, and at age 14 he got his first job in Newton at Browning King. The family liked Bobby so much they took him on a buying trip to NYC. and that’s where he fell in love with the clothing business.

Bob was a graduate of Newton High School and Boston University. After BU where he was president of his pledge class, he went to work at the family clothing store “Mr. Sid” in Newton Centre and expanded it twice to its present size. He moved to Southern California to find “Fun in the sun lifestyle.” While there he opened his own men’s clothing store in Newport Beach, he then traveled as a representative for fine menswear from Seattle to San Diego and in between. Bob pursued many passions, including Bonsai gardening, tropical fish, traveling, swimming, and enjoying fine food and wine. Bob’s love of life and gregarious personality made people fall in love with him!  In fact, everyone he met received a birthday card every year after.  His curiosity never quit-it fueled his desire to live, learn and love.
Bob is survived by his wife, Karen Shaw Segel; his sons, Scott Sidney Segel and Eric Charles Segel and granddaughters, Zoe Elena Segel and Marina Robbie Segel. He is also survived by his brother, Alvin G. Segel, and was predeceased by his brother, Ira M. Segal.
Services will be private.  

In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made to the American Heart Association in Bob’s name.
