Robert Slamin Obituary

Robert H. "Slats" Slamin, a Retired Newton Police officer, died suddenly Dec 5, 2011 at St. Elizabeth's Medical Center in Brighton. He was 74.
Born in Watertown, Slats graduated from Newton High in 1956. He served in SeaBees in the National Guard for 8 years, and was appointed to the Newton Police Dept. in 1967 He retired in 1994. Slats was an antique car enthusiast and mechanic, and restored many antique cars and won several awards and trophies for his restorations. He had attended many Daytona 500 races. He was also a member of the Newton Knights of Columbus.
He was the beloved husband of Judith (Harbester) Slamin, the loving father of Lynne Slamin-Smith of Walpole, Joseph J. and his wife Mariellen of Mashpee and Laura Slamin Lanfear and her husband Christopher A. of West Newton, the loving Papa of Jillianne R. and Alexander J. Smith and Julia Lynne Slamin Lanfear and Tessa Amanda Slamin Lanfear. He was the brother of Norma Hayden of Waltham, Leo F. of Watertown and Janet Cross of Marlboro and the brother in law of Franklin Harbester of Hanson and Edith Thompson of Plympton. He is also survived by many nieces and nephews.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on Fri Dec 9 at 10:30 AM in Our Lady Help of Christians Church in Newton followed by interment in Newton Cemetery. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home 465 Centre St Newton Corner on Thurs from 4-8 PM.
In lieu of flowers memorials may be made in his name to the American Heart Assoc 20 Speen St. Framingham MA 01701 or the American Cancer Society 30 Speen St Framingham MA 01701.
