S. Eunice Wenstrom, 85, a Newton resident, died peacefully at home on December 2.
Born in Somerville, MA 9/4/26, she was the daughter of the late Matti Walter Wenstrom and Margaret Isabel (MacDonald) Wenstrom, graduating from Quincy High School (1943), the family moved to Newton Corner in that year. Eunice graduated from Gordon College and Divinity School (1950), then located in Boston's Fenway section. She worked for G.Campbell Hall, Boston. Eunice earned a Master of Divinity degree from Princeton Theological Seminary in 1953 and began work in the Christian Education field, serving at the Presbyterian Church, Morrisville, PA 1953-56; Madison Avenue Presbyterian Church, NY, NY 1957-1961 and at Scarsdale Congregational Church, NY, 1961-1963.
Moving back to Newton to help the family purchase the home in Newtonville, Eunice worked as Assistant Registrar and Administrative Assistant in the School of Library Science at Simmons College, 1964-1976. While there, she received a Master of Science degree (1971).
After 1976, she obtained work as Administrative Assistant to the President of Howe & Bainbridge. From 1986-1991, Eunice was co-owner of Businessfolk, Inc. She was a lifelong charter member of the Women's Health Initiative, a national survey of aging processes in women.
Eunice devoted her life to serving the Lord with all her heart. She became the first woman in the Presbyterian Boston Presbytery commissioned as a Church Worker (10/25/53). With new friends, she was always welcoming and never ceased to inquire if they had a church home and whether they'd like to attend services at her church, Newton Presbyterian. She was able to convey her love of Jesus Christ to whomever she met on her life's journey. She lived by the Biblical precept, they that are with him are called, and chosen, and faithful (Rev. 17:14). She studied and read the Bible through at least three times a year as a guide to her life.
She loved to travel, often dropping everything to just go out for a walk. In 1962, Eunice bought camping gear and, with her mother and 14-year-old brother, drove across the U.S. to visit relatives in Oregon, returning via Canada. She especially enjoyed traveling each summer (with her current dog or cat) to the MacDonald family farm at Lake Ainslie, Cape Breton, N.S., and will be missed there.
Christmas was Eunice's favorite family season and she always made sure it was the special celebration of the birth of Christ.
As well as her parents, she is predeceased by sisters, Ruth Vulk, Richmond, VA, and Margaret Reneau, Chula Vista, CA. She leaves sisters, C.A. Virginia Young, Stoughton, MA, Carol Hamilton, Warren, MA, and brother, David Wenstrom, Newtonville, MA, an uncle in Washington state, an aunt in Nova Scotia, numerous nieces, nephews and cousins.
A funeral service will be held on Thurs. Dec 8 at 1:30 PM in the Newton Presbyterian Church, 75 Vernon St., Newton Corner. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be in the Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, 465 Centre St., Newton Corner on Wed 4-8 PM.
