Shirley Williamson Obituary

Shirley Marie Williamson, 66, a longtime Needham, MA resident, passed away peacefully on March 23, 2024.

A cherished friend and a loving Auntie with a beautiful smile, Shirley was a special person who made each of us smile with her sense of humor and wit.

Shirley was born September 29, 1957 in Tucson, AZ to Russell and Audrey Joan (Rickstrew) Williamson.  She is survived by Deborah A. Gustafson of Needham, MA, her brother Michael A. Williamson of CO Springs, CO and her aunts Jean Pilcher of Carrollton, TX and Rose Hull of Shawnee, OK and their families.   Shirley was predeceased by her parents and her nephew, Christoper Williamson.

Only two months prior to her death, Shirley was diagnosed with Stage 4 non-small cell lung cancer.  Her battle with cancer was fierce but short.  She was under the amazing care of the Dana Farber/Brigham & Women’s team and was supported by family and friends throughout.

Shirley graduated from the University of Delaware with a BS and MS in Civil Engineering specializing in hydraulics.  As a professional engineer, she worked 20 years for Stone & Webster Engineering Corp. and 17 years for WSP USA. During her career, she held many leadership positions, most recently as vice president in the hydropower business sector.  Shirley enjoyed her work and her coworkers but particularly enjoyed mentoring others throughout her career.

As an avid lifelong learner Shirley enjoyed crossword puzzles, current events and her many spreadsheets.  She treasured her time with her nieces, nephews, cousins and friends who clearly valued her knowledge and engaging conversations.  Shirley also enjoyed hiking the many trails in MA and loved attending youth hockey games watching her favorite hockey player.

Shirley spent time in Hilton Head, SC where she enjoyed the beach, playing golf, and spending time with family and friends.  She loved traveling both near and far with trips throughout New England and visits to National Parks nationwide but especially Utah, Montana and Wyoming.  Of special importance were her recent visits to the Grand Tetons and the Pacific Northwest with good friends.

We have all lost a dear loving friend but the world is a better place because Shirley Williamson was here.
