Stephen Fauteux Obituary

Stephen P. Fauteux, of Newton, MA, passed away September 14, 2025.  He was 76.  Born on September 24, 1948 to Urban A. Fauteux and Madeleine Hogan Fauteux, he was raised in East Hartford, CT and graduated from George J. Penney High School.  Steve earned his bachelor's degree from Yale University in June 1970. Two months after graduation he was drafted into the U. S. Army, where he served for two years, primarily at Walson Army Hospital, Ft. Dix, NJ, as a physical therapy technician.  While at Ft. Dix he founded the Junior Enlisted Council to represent the concerns of young soldiers, an initiative that drew national notice and earned him an invitation to testify before Congress, where he spoke for the enlisted soldiers whose voices too often went unheard.
Steve met his wife of 54 years, Kathleen McKenna Fauteux, while they were both at school in New Haven.  They were married on December 26, 1970. After completing his military service, Steve earned his JD at Harvard Law School.  In 1977, Steve and Kathy moved from Cambridge to Newton, MA, where they raised their three sons, Kevin, Michael and Andrew.

After law school Steve worked as a Massachusetts Assistant Attorney General and for the Federal Trade Commission. In 1982 he went to work at the Massachusetts State Ethics Commission as Chief of the Enforcement Division, a position he served in for three decades. He loved his work and enjoyed working with the enforcement division team.

Steve’s passion was always public service.  As a young man he was active in scouting and attained the rank of Eagle Scout.  In both high school and college, he was a scoutmaster for local troops.

When his three sons joined Newton Youth Soccer, so did he — first as a coach, then as a board member, and ultimately as president of both Newton Youth Soccer and Boston Area Youth Soccer.  Known as the “Field Czar,” he led a partnership with the city to drill wells and install irrigation across all of Newton’s soccer fields, which had been hardened and worn by years of overuse. For this work, he received the Judge Franklin N. Flashner Youth Service Award in 1997.

Steve was a charter member of the "Dawn Patrol" at Newton Commonwealth Golf Course.  The official tee time for the “patrol” was 2 minutes before dawn, unless there was snow on the ground or the wind chill was below 25.  There was never a more joyful group of golfers.

Steve and Kathy were fortunate to see much of the world together, but their happiest place was Sandy Island YMCA Family Camp on Lake Winnipesaukee, where they returned each summer with their children and grandchildren for 35 years as proud Week 3 campers.

A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, Steve will be remembered for his dedication to family and his incredible work ethic. Steve is survived by his beloved wife, Kathy Fauteux, his children: Kevin Fauteux and his wife, Jessica Fauteux of Lynnfield, MA, Michael Fauteux and his wife, Jean Yu of Greenbrae, CA and Andrew Fauteux and his wife, Sunali Fauteux, of Newton, MA, and his grandchildren: Lila, William, Henry, Jack, Cameron, Stephen, Emily and Rishi Fauteux.  He is also survived by his sisters Maureen Schofield and Colleen Fauteux and his brother Kevin Fauteux.

The family wishes to acknowledge with gratitude the many kindnesses shown to Steve during his brave struggle with Parkinson’s Disease, especially his dedicated medical teams at the Veterans Administration and Massachusetts General Hospital.

Calling hours will be held September 18, from 4-7 p.m. at Eaton & Mackay Funeral Home, Newton, MA. The funeral procession will assemble at the funeral home on September 19, at 9:30 a.m. and will proceed to a 10:30 a.m. Mass of Christian Burial at Our Lady Help of Christians, Washington Street, Newton, MA.  Burial will be private.
