Thalia Hoban Obituary

Thalia (Markantes) Hoban, at age 97, passed away peacefully under the care of Old Colony Hospice at Victoria Haven Nursing Home on November 17, 2021.

Thalia was the beloved wife of Thomas Hoban, with whom she shared 56 years of marriage before his passing in 2003. She was the devoted mother of Tom Hoban of Manchester, NH and his late wife Maureen; Wendy Crowell and her husband Chris of Plymouth, MA; Meredith Dunn and her late husband Jack of Westwood, MA.  She is also survived by her four grandchildren: Jennifer Carter of Exira, IA; Allison Crowell of NYC, NY; Adriana Dunn of Westwood and Andrew Dunn of Westwood, MA.  She is survived by one loving sister-in-law, Martha Holmes of Fairfax VA, and many nephews, nieces and friends.  She was predeceased by her parents Nicholas Markantes and Maria Kapetanakis Markantes, and her beloved siblings Peter Markantes, Helen Markantes Daniel and Christo Markantes.

A graduate of Boston University with a Bachelor’s degree in Business Administration, she enjoyed a varied career spanning singing, teaching, bookkeeping and tax preparation.

She was a gourmet cook, who enjoyed trying new recipes and seldom did she cook the same meal twice in one month.

An avid golfer, she was a member of Wellesley CC, Ridgewood CC and most recently Needham GC. Her strength being putting, she was a past champion of the putting challenge at Fox Hill Village where she was a longtime resident. She also loved to play bridge, do jigsaw puzzles and of course the NY Times Sunday crossword.

A classically trained soprano, Thalia performed professionally under the name of Linda Marshall as a young woman. In later days she sang in church choirs.

She was a dedicated volunteer. Meals on Wheels, The League of Women Voters, English as a Second Language, and the Inner City Library were just a few of the beneficiaries of her altruism.

She so enjoyed traveling with her family and friends, visiting Greece, France, Italy, England, Ireland, the Caribbean and Hawaii.

Her Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated on December 11th at 11am at St John’s Episcopal Church, 95 Deerfield St, Westwood. Interment will be private at the National Cemetery in Bourne. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Old Colony Hospice, 321 Manley Street, West Bridgewater 02379 or any charity of your choice.
