Timothy Robert Barber was born in Bennington, Vermont, December 19, 1958 to Robert and Margaret (Gordon) Barber. He grew up in Melrose, Massachusetts and was a member of the Melrose High School class of 1976. After earning a BS from Baldwin Wallace University in Berea, Ohio in 1981, Tim returned to the Boston area. In May 1995 he married Mary Catherine Hillmer and they settled in Needham, Massachusetts where they raised children, Elizabeth Helen and William Walter Barber. Tim worked as a Principal Software Engineer at Cognex for over 27 years. An avid cyclist, skier, hiker, nature enthusiast, woodworker, and stargazer, he also loved spending time with his extended family, especially on Cape Cod and at Thompson Lake in Maine. Tim’s primary focus was always his beloved wife, Mary, and their children, Elizabeth and Will. He also cherished time with his friends whether biking with buddies in his neighborhood, gathering for Soup Night, or keeping in touch with friends from childhood. Tim died peacefully at home with his family on July 22, 2021 after battling lung cancer for a year and a half.
Visiting hours will be held Friday, July 30th, 4-7pm at the Eaton Funeral Home, 1351 Highland Ave., Needham, MA 02492. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 31st at 10am at the Congregational Church of Needham, 1154 Great Plain Ave, Needham, MA 02492. A private burial will be held on a later date.
In addition to many loving family members and friends, Tim leaves his wife Mary and children Elizabeth and William; his mother, Margaret Barber; uncles, Warren Barber and David Barber, and the late Glenn Barber and William Gordon; sister, Shelley Barber; sister-in-law, Terry Waite, and her husband Steve; brother-in-law, Neil Hillmer, and his wife Joan; many cousins, and nine nieces and nephews.
