Walter M. Cabot

Walter Mason Cabot, distinguished investment executive, trusted advisor, devoted husband, father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and civic leader, passed away peacefully on June 2, 2026, at the age of 93. He lived a life marked by exceptional professional achievement, steadfast integrity, personal inquiry, and a deep commitment to family, education, and public service.

Walter is perhaps best known for founding and leading the Harvard Management Company, the investment organization responsible for managing Harvard University’s endowment. His work at Harvard pioneered the way many universities and nonprofit institutions manage their investment assets today. He was educated at Milton Academy, Harvard College, and Harvard Business School, and served in the U.S. Army and the Central Intelligence Agency before beginning his distinguished investment career.

Throughout his life, Walter believed deeply in giving back to his community and devoted decades to serving educational, charitable, healthcare, and business institutions. He served as Treasurer of Wellesley College and as Governor and Chairman of the Board of Governors of Tufts Medical Center. He also held trusteeships and leadership positions with Massachusetts General Hospital, Noble and Greenough School, Thompson Island Outward Bound, Charles River School, the Sprague Trust, St. Paul’s Church, the Harvard Business School Club of Boston, The Boston Company, the Twentieth Century Fund, and many other organizations.

In his hometown of Dover, Massachusetts, Walter served as Chairman of the Warrant Committee and was deeply involved in civic affairs. His corporate leadership included service as a director of numerous public and private companies, including Rockefeller Financial Services, General Reinsurance Corporation, and Lifespan.

Beyond his professional and civic accomplishments, Walter was an avid sailor, an aspiring watercolor artist, and a meticulous keeper of journals, ledgers, and family trusts. His favorite place in the world was his summer home in North Haven, Maine, where summers were spent sailing, gathering with family, and enjoying the beauty of Penobscot Bay.

Above all else, Walter’s greatest love was his wife, Dorothy “Dorsey” Scullin Cabot. On June 19, 1955, they were married, beginning a partnership that would span more than seventy years. Their enduring devotion to one another was an inspiring example of love, loyalty, and companionship. Together they built a family grounded in shared values, kindness, and unwavering support.

Walter is survived by his beloved wife, Dorothy S. Cabot; his four children, Walter M. Cabot Jr., Linda N. Cabot, David R. Cabot, and James S. Cabot, and their spouses; ten grandchildren; six great-grandchildren; and countless friends, colleagues, and family members whose lives were enriched by his guidance, generosity, and mentorship.

Walter’s life was one of purpose, service, and dedication. His legacy endures in the institutions he strengthened, the people he mentored, and the family he cherished. His loved ones remain forever inspired by the selflessness, courage, wisdom, and love that he embodied throughout his long and extraordinary life.

He will be deeply missed and forever remembered.

Memorial services will be held on September 19 at 3:00 p.m. at Dover Church in Dover, Massachusetts.
