William Ewald Obituary

William Ewald, in Weston, MA, on Nov 19, 2023. Beloved husband for 59 years of Margret (Scheuer) Ewald, devoted father to his sons and their spouses Oliver and Negin Ewald and Michael and Laurie Ewald, and dear grandfather of Leyla, Max, Caroline, and Cate.

William was born and raised in Mülheim-Ruhr, Germany, and after high school served an apprenticeship with Siemens before embarking on a worldwide journey which led some to believe he was an international spy.  Indeed, he was once described as an “expensive-smelling German businessman” in the San Francisco Chronicle by columnist Herb Caen, and his lifelong love of languages served him well.  He began his foreign postings in Kenya selling Bosch spark plugs to local automotive garages and proudly “imported” his eventual wife from Germany during this time.  He eventually switched to pharmaceutical sales with Upjohn, moving to Beirut, Lebanon, for two years and then on to Korea for another five.  Professionally, he made one more move, to Bayer, for whom he moved his family to Tokyo, Japan; San Francisco, CA; back to Germany; and eventually Fairfield, CT, before finally retiring back to northern California with Margret.  As both their sons and their families had settled in the Boston area, William and Margret moved to Weston about a decade ago, reluctant to leave their friends and encounter snow.  William had a longtime love of music, owning and regularly playing a variety of instruments, and especially enjoyed playing the trumpet with his local jazz band.  Regular discussion groups in his Highland Meadows community also brought him joy.  Finally, he adored his grandchildren and queried them constantly about the goings on in their lives.
