William D. "Ralph" Mercer of Needham, formerly of Brookline, died on Sunday, June 24, 2012 at Beth Israel Deaconess Hospital in Needham he was 94 years old. Born in Ireland, Ralph was the son of the late Esther (McGregor) and William D. Mercer. At age 3 is family moved to the US and settled in Brookline. Ralph was educated in the Brookline Schools and graduated from Brookline High School. He served in the US Navy during World War II. Ralph worked as a truck mechanic for Gulf Oil for over 30 years, until he retired. He had been a resident of Brookline for most of his life and moved to Needham 3 years ago. He enjoyed spending time at his camp in New Hampshire and loved watching sports and was an avid reader. The beloved husband for 65 years of Esther L. (McCracken) Mercer, he was the loving father of Carolyn Clendenin and her husband Ben of Medfield and Bob Mercer and his wife Elaine of Needham. Ralph was the brother of Stanley Mercer of Duxbury, Jack Mercer of Ft. Lauderdale FL, Norma Mercer of Needham and the late Clifford Mercer and Doris Hughes. Visiting hour on Wednesday morning from 10 to 11 am in the Eaton Funeral Home 1351 Highland Ave Needham followed by a funeral service at 11 am. Relatives and friends are kindly invited to attend. Interment Walnut Hills Cemetery, Brookline. In lieu of flowers donations in Ralph's name may be made to a charity of your choice.
