Éva Demjén Obituary

Éva (Hidvégi) Demjén passed away peacefully at the age of 76 on December 2, 2024. Éva was predeceased by her parents Sarolta and Tibor. She is survived by her husband of over 50 years, Gábor, her daughter, Michelle (husband Scott), and son, Nicholas (wife Jessica). She relished her role as Nagymama to her grandchildren Szilvia, Juliet, Robert, and Alexander. Éva’s beloved sisters, Márta and Lia, live in Hungary.

Éva’s life began in Budapest, Hungary, where at a young age she established herself as a talented photographer. There, as a teen at a photo club, she met her future husband, Gábor. They daringly set out for the United States as refugees with time spent first in Paris and Vienna (where they married) as they awaited their papers.

Soon after settling in the Boston area, Éva owned and managed Black and White, Inc. for decades in Boston. Her lab printed black and white photographs for diverse clients including historical societies, the Boston Celtics, rock stars, and archival prints for local artists. Over the years she used part of the lab space to host gallery openings for various artists.

Éva and Gábor raised their children in Belmont, Natick, and Wellesley. They loved their final home together in Needham. Later in life, Éva continued her photography including experimenting with pinhole cameras, infrared film, and the technique of photograms. Four of her photograms became part of the deCordova Museum’s Corporate Art Loan Program. Outside of her artwork, Éva was an avid reader and prolific skillful knitter. Éva enjoyed annual trips to Cape Cod where she spent hours collecting sea glass, driftwood, and shells. As a talented cook, many enjoyed her delicious meals. Her greatest joy was spending time with family, especially her grandchildren.

Éva’s family and friends will grieve in private. They ask that in lieu of flowers, people take time to visit museums, art shows, support local artists, and always pay attention to how the sunlight is hitting objects at different times of day throughout the seasons. Art is everywhere and Éva always noticed.
